Tata Sierra 1.5 turbo petrol hits 222 kmph in high-speed test

Key highlights

  • The new 1.5 turbo petrol Sierra hits a verified top speed of 222 kmph during internal testing.
  • The SUV uses Tata’s new-gen TGDi engine paired with a dual-clutch automatic.
  • Shows a clear performance jump over Tata’s existing ICE lineup, hinting at a sportier direction for the brand.

The all-new Tata Sierra, powered by the brand’s new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, has reportedly clocked a top speed of 222 kmph during high-speed validation tests. Yes, you read that right. A Sierra doing over 220.

The test

The performance comes from Tata’s new TGDi petrol motor, which produces around 160 bhp and over 250 Nm of torque. The engine pairs with a dual-clutch automatic that keeps the powerband awake and ready. Tata has clearly worked on drivetrain response, because pushing a mid-size, boxy SUV to 222 kmph is not something you achieve with wishful thinking.

Tata Sierra

The test mule ran on Tata’s proving grounds, where engineers repeated high-speed runs to validate stability, cooling, traction control logic and powertrain durability. The Sierra held its line cleanly at high triple digits, which hints at solid aero work and a stiffer body structure. For a family SUV with a nostalgia-heavy badge, this is a big move into a performance-first territory.

ACT platform

Tata’s upcoming models sit on the new ACT platform, which supports stronger crash performance and more refined dynamics. The Sierra uses this architecture and benefits from a reworked suspension layout that reduces body roll and improves high-speed composure. The 222 kmph run is not just a flex; it’s a sign that Tata wants to nudge the Sierra into the “lifestyle SUV” space with more confidence than ever.

The test data also hints at improved NVH levels, better cooling management and a smoother mid-range. These numbers make the Sierra Tata’s quickest ICE SUV yet.

The brand has been pushing its petrol tech hard, and this top-speed headline fits neatly into its broader strategy of making its SUVs more fun without compromising their practicality. The Sierra’s design already has people talking. Now the performance is joining the chat.
