Tesla Model Y surpass 1,000 unit sales in India since launch

Key highlights

  • Tesla Model Y crosses 1,000 sales in India
  • September 2026 recorded the highest-ever sales
  • Range starts at Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom)

As per the latest data update on the Vahan Portal India, the American EV manufacturer Tesla has recorded 1,017 unit sales for its sole model on sale in India, i.e. Model Y. The EV has witnessed a consistent increase in sales ever since its price was revised in May 2026.

Tesla launched the Model Y in India last year. However, the EV was not received the way the brand expected. The reason behind the sluggish sales was its high price. Moreover, the limited network and service centres did not support sales either.

Later, Tesla revised the price in May 2026 when the Model Y Premium RWD (5-seater) version received a massive Rs 9 lakh price cut. This was reflected in July 2026 sales immediately, as the brand recorded a 205 percent hike in monthly sales. The price cut brought down the entry-level version price to Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom), which placed it closely against rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and BYD Sealion 7.

The Model Y Premium RWD is powered by a 64 kWh battery that offers a WLTP-claimed range of 500 km. It makes 299 bhp and 420 Nm, while sending the power to the rear wheels. Meanwhile, the range-topping Model Y L Premium gets a bigger battery whose size has not been revealed yet, but it does offer a WLTP-claimed range of up to 681 km.

As of now, Tesla has 6 operational showrooms in India located in New Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The company is working on its expansion plan that also includes the installation of DC charging stations pan-India.
