Key highlights
- Hyundai compact EV likely to be called Ioniq P
- Debut expected in January 2027
- Likely to be based on the Inster EV’s platform
During the recent global earnings call, Hyundai’s top official referred to the upcoming compact EV by the name Ioniq P, solidifying rumours that it will be called Ioniq P worldwide. With that said, Hyundai has recently confirmed that it will launch this compact EV in India in Q4 of FY2027.
Hyundai compact EV: What do we know so far?
The upcoming compact EV from Hyundai will be positioned against rivals like the Tata Punch EV in India. It will be a sub-4m electric SUV, and we have already come across a number of test mules by now, giving us a faint idea of how it will look.
Online reports hint that it will be based on the Hyundai Inster EV’s platform, with slight modifications. The test mules bear a boxy, tallboy design language, which confirms that it will be city-centric to offer easy manoeuvrability and handling, along with a spacious cabin.
Calling it Ioniq P seems natural as the brand’s Ioniq range is already positioned as a premium EV range worldwide. The Ioniq P will be able to attract more customers by following this nomenclature.
Some of the exterior design highlights will include the dual-tone geometric alloy wheels, blanked-off grille, connected LED lights, etc. Meanwhile, the interior is expected to feature the Pleo Connect infotainment system. It will become the first Hyundai car to offer the latter in India, followed by the next-gen Creta.
Since it is expected to share the platform with the Inster, we believe that it can offer the 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery options, with a maximum range of up to 526 km.
The Ioniq P is expected to be launched in India by the end of January 2027. It is likely to be priced around Rs 10-15 lakh.
