Volkswagen is bringing one of its best-known SUV nameplates into the electric era. The ID. Tiguan will make its global debut in early October 2026, with sales in international markets scheduled to begin in early 2027.
The new electric SUV will replace the ID.4 and ID.5, which have together recorded more than 950,000 deliveries since 2021. Volkswagen is now moving away from its numbered EV naming strategy and using established model names such as Tiguan for its electric products.
New design and a more familiar name
Volkswagen says the ID. Tiguan will feature a completely new design and have a visual presence closer to the segment above. The production-ready SUV is currently undergoing testing under camouflage, so detailed design elements and interior specifications remain under wraps.
The name itself is an important part of the strategy. Volkswagen says more than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles have been produced globally, giving the nameplate considerably more recognition than the ID.4 badge. The ID. Tiguan follows the recently announced ID. Polo and ID. Cross in adopting an established Volkswagen name for an electric model.
ICE and electric Tiguans to coexist
The ID. Tiguan will not replace the conventional Tiguan. Volkswagen will continue selling the existing SUV with combustion and hybrid powertrains alongside the new electric model.
This gives Volkswagen two versions of the Tiguan catering to different powertrain preferences, while also simplifying its EV naming strategy.
Specifications still under wraps
Volkswagen has not yet revealed the battery capacity, motor outputs, charging capability or official driving range of the ID. Tiguan. These details are expected to be announced around its October world premiere.
The electric SUV is scheduled to reach markets from early 2027. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed an India launch or India-specific specifications.
