Yamaha R2: Everything we know so far
As per a recent report online, Yamaha India is working on a new YZF-R2 model, a name that has been homologated in the recent past. This new sportsbike will be positioned above the R15, and it has been codenamed 070.
The R2 sportsbike will be a 100% made-in-India product, as its development and manufacturing will be entirely done in India. As far as its engine specs are concerned, it will feature a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor, which will offer an expected output of 20-25 bhp.
While there have been many rumours online suggesting that the R15 will be discontinued, we believe it won’t. The R15 remains the bread and butter for Yamaha in India, and it also powers the two other models, including the MT-15 and the newly launched XSR155. It is highly unlikely that the R15 will be axed and replaced by a more expensive model.
So, why 200cc and not the 250cc? It is being speculated that Yamaha wants to offer a blend of performance that is slightly more than the R15, so that buyers can feel the upgrade, but at the same time, the brand wants to make this bike fuel-efficient and convenient for everyday use.
The report also hints that the R2 will launch in India by the festive season this year. It will also be exported to the international markets from India. Since its primary rival will be the KTM RC 200, the expected price range of the Yamaha R2 is Rs 2.25-2.45 lakh.
