Key highlights
- Toyota is recalling 11,529 units of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder due to a defective analogue fuel level indicator.
- Affected vehicles were built between December 9, 2024, and April 29, 2025.
- Toyota will inspect and, if needed, replace the combination meter free of cost at authorised service centres.
Toyota India has announced a voluntary recall of over 11,500 Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUVs. The reason: a potentially faulty analogue fuel level indicator that may misreport fuel levels.
What’s going wrong
According to Toyota and SIAM (the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), the issue lies in the combination meter, which houses the analogue fuel gauge. In some Hyryder units, the gauge may fail to show the correct fuel level. Worse, the low-fuel warning light may not turn on even when the tank is nearly empty.
This means drivers could be unaware that they’re running out of fuel and in some cases, the engine might stall for lack of fuel. That’s not just inconvenient; it’s potentially dangerous.
Which cars are affected
- 11,529 units of the Hyryder are impacted.
- These vehicles were manufactured between 9 December 2024 and 29 April 2025.
- The issue is specific to petrol versions with analog fuel gauges, hybrid or CNG variants are not mentioned as part of this recall.
What Toyota is doing
Toyota says its dealerships will contact owners whose cars fall into the affected batch. They will inspect the combination meter, and if they detect the fault, they will replace it — free of charge.
Owners who want to confirm whether their car is part of the recall can:
- Visit Toyota’s Safety Recall page and enter their VIN.
- Call 1800-309-0001, Toyota’s toll-free customer care line.
Similarity with Grand Vitara
Interestingly, the Hyryder shares several components with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitaraand Maruti recently recalled over 39,500 Grand Vitara units for the same fuel gauge issue. This suggests a common supplier or a shared design vulnerability.
