Delhi to ban petrol bikes, scooters, and three-wheelers from 2028

In a bizarre move, the Delhi government has proposed to completely ban the registration of new petrol-powered motorcycles, scooters, and even three-wheelers from 2028. This latest proposal comes after a consistent push by the current state government towards implementing the EV Policy 2026-2030.

As per the details, the latest EV Policy allows the registration of only electric two-wheelers from 2028, while electric three-wheelers from 2027 onwards. This proposal is to curb the ever-growing pollution in the capital, which has become a serious issue over the past few years. However, it is ironic that the two-wheelers contribute a very small percentage to the pollution, yet the state government believes that it will reduce the pollution substantially.

Meanwhile, to help residents move on from petrol to EV-powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers, subsidies will also be allotted. These will include Rs 10,000/kWh in the first year, capped at Rs 30,000. Rs 6,600/kWh in the second year, capped at Rs 20,000. Rs 3,300/kWh in the third year, capped at Rs 10,000.

On the other hand, the electric three-wheelers will be allotted a subsidy of Rs 50,000 in the first year, Rs 40,000 in the second year, and Rs 30,000 in the third year. Furthermore, the electric goods carriers that belong to the N1 category will get Rs 1 lakh incentive in the first year, Rs 75,000 in the second year, and Rs 50,000 in the third year.

This results in the total benefits of Rs 10,000 for two-wheelers, Rs 25,000 for three-wheelers, Rs 1 lakh for cars of up to Rs 30 lakh, and Rs 50,000 for goods carriers.
