Key highlights
- KTM 390 Duke targets affordability and usability, while 390 Duke R goes all-in on performance
- Both bikes share the same platform, features, and aggressive design
- The difference comes down to engine character and how much madness you want
KTM has quietly split its streetfighter lineup into two clear personalities. One is more accessible, the other is the full-fat, no-compromise. On paper, they look similar. On the road, they don’t feel the same at all.
Let’s break it down the way you actually care about.
Nomenclature and visual changes
To end all confusion, yes the 350cc Duke is still called the 390 Duke. With that out of the way, the 399cc Duke is now called the 390 Duke R.
In terms of appearance, both motorcycles are quite similar. They do have different graphic styles. The immediate giveaway though is the chassis which is painted in Orange for the 390 Duke R while it remains black for the 390 Duke. The Orange alloys too are reserved for the R.

This is where the story really changes.

Ride and handling
Both bikes share the same DNA. Lightweight chassis. Sharp geometry. Quick direction changes.

- The 390 Duke R feels like it’s always ready to attack. It turns quicker. It reacts faster. It feels more alive.
Same skeleton. Different mindset.
Pricing and positioning
The whole reason the 390 with a 349cc engine exists is simple. GST. Sub-350cc bikes fall into a lower GST 18% bracket. That makes the 350 more affordable while keeping most of the experience intact. The updated 390 Duke is priced at Rs 2.77 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.
The 390 Duke R sits higher in the 40% GST bracket. You pay more, but you get the full performance package. The updated 390 Duke R is priced at Rs 3.39 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. Which is approx. Rs. 62,000 more.
Which one should you actually buy?
Let’s simplify it.
- Go for the 350 Duke if:
- You ride daily in the city
- You want something fun but manageable
- You don’t want to constantly fight the bike
- Go for the 390 Duke R if:
- You love aggressive riding
- Weekend rides matter more than office commutes
- You want the fastest thing in this segment
KTMs strategy here is simple, they have introduced a sub-350cc product to keep the brand accessible. However, they are not compromising on the bigger engine and is offering the full package to enthusiasts who are willing to pay the extra moolah for the complete Duke experience.
