Kia Sorento spotted testing again in India, hybrid SUV launch likely

Key highlights

  • Kia Sorento spotted testing once again on Indian roads
  • Expected to rival the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron and Toyota Fortuner
  • Strong hybrid powertrain expected for India launch

The Kia Sorento has been spotted testing in India once again, strengthening speculation about its long-awaited India launch.

The latest spy shots show a heavily camouflaged test mule, but key design elements remain visible. The SUV gets Kia’s latest global styling with vertically stacked LED headlamps, a large grille, connected tail-lamps and chunky proportions. It looks properly premium and significantly larger than the Kia Seltos.

Kia Sorento outside India

Globally, the Sorento sits in the three-row D-SUV segment and measures close to 4.8 metres in length. If launched here, it will take on rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster.

What makes the Sorento especially important is its expected hybrid powertrain. Kia has already confirmed plans to bring hybrid models to India by 2030, including the Sorento Hybrid. Internationally, the SUV gets a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid setup.

The cabin is expected to pack in all the premium features buyers now expect in this segment, including dual digital screens, ADAS, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and connected car tech.

Reports also suggest Kia may localise the SUV to keep pricing competitive. Expected pricing could fall in the Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh range.

The Sorento would fill an important gap in Kia’s India lineup. Right now, the brand has strong products in the mass-premium space, but lacks a true flagship family SUV above the Seltos and Carens.

Our thoughts

The timing for the Sorento actually feels perfect. Indian buyers are clearly moving toward premium three-row SUVs, but not everyone wants a hardcore ladder-frame SUV anymore. Many buyers simply want something spacious, feature-loaded and comfortable for long-distance family use. And if Kia gets the hybrid package and pricing right, this could become one of the most well-rounded premium SUVs in the segment.
