Android Auto gets a massive upgrade with Dolby Atmos

Key highlights

  • Google adds Dolby Atmos support to Android Auto
  • New update also brings YouTube video playback, immersive 3D Maps and Gemini AI integration
  • Brands like Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz will support the new features

Google has announced one of the biggest updates ever for Android Auto, and the headline feature is Dolby Atmos support. The update will allow compatible cars and apps to deliver immersive spatial audio directly through Android Auto, bringing a much richer in-car entertainment experience for users.

Dolby Atmos support comes to Android Auto

With Dolby Atmos integration, supported music and media apps will offer more immersive sound with better depth and spatial separation. Google says the feature will initially roll out on supported vehicles from brands including:

  • BMW
  • Mahindra
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Hyundai
  • Kia
  • Tata Motors
  • Volvo
  • Skoda
  • Renault

Compatible apps are expected to include platforms that already support Dolby Atmos audio streaming globally.

YouTube and video playback finally arrive

Another major addition is video playback support. For the first time, Android Auto will allow users to stream YouTube videos in Full HD at 60fps directly on the infotainment screen while the car is parked or charging.

Once the vehicle starts moving, playback automatically switches to audio-only mode for safety. Which basically means your long podcast video won’t abruptly die the moment traffic starts moving at 3 kmph.

Google Maps gets a huge visual overhaul

Google is also introducing a new Immersive Navigation experience for Maps.

The updated system adds:

  • Detailed 3D visuals
  • Lane-level guidance
  • Traffic light indicators
  • Stop sign overlays
  • Better terrain and road visuals

The interface itself has also been redesigned using Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language with smoother animations, widgets and edge-to-edge layouts for modern infotainment screens.

Gemini AI is becoming smarter inside cars

Google’s Gemini AI assistant is also getting deeper integration with Android Auto.

The system will now be able to:

  • Read contextual information from messages and calendars
  • Suggest replies
  • Perform voice-based tasks
  • Handle app interactions more naturally

Cars with Google built-in will receive even deeper vehicle integration, including the ability to answer vehicle-specific questions and provide smarter navigation assistance.

Rollout timeline

Google says these features will gradually roll out through 2026 on supported cars and infotainment systems. Not every car will get every feature immediately, since availability depends on hardware compatibility, software support and manufacturer integration.
