Key highlights
- KTM 390 SMC launch expected soon
- It is likely to get the 349cc engine due to the GST 2.0 slabs
- KTM will not badge it SMC R like the global market
Online speculations hint that the 390 SMC or SuperMoto Competition model could be launched by KTM in India by the end of this year. The 390 SMC is the only missing piece in completing the KTM 390 range of models in India.
KTM 390 SMC: What to expect?
Globally, the 390 SMC is sold with an additional suffix, i.e. SMC ‘R’. However, the ‘R’ suffix might be dropped for the India market, as the brand could detune its 399cc motor to the 349cc engine, which has already been done on the current 390 range. The reason behind the detune is the GST 2.0 tax slabs, which will attract a lower price if the bike is below 350cc.
Globally, the 390 SMC R is a lightweight dual-sport motorcycle that has been inspired by the supermoto bikes. The purpose of its design is simple: offer more fun-to-ride ratio and less weight so that riders can enjoy it the way they like it.
If the Indian-spec 390 SMC gets a 349cc engine, it could produce around 41 bhp and 33.5 Nm of peak power and torque. The hardware setup on it could also be premium, which we expect will include a fully-adjustable suspension as on the 390 Enduro R and 17-inch tubeless spoked rims.
It will get a slim body design with a long seat and a small fuel tank. The riding posture will be upright and commanding, while it will feature a long beak at the front and an LED headlight that will be backed by a digital display similar to the 390 Enduro R.
With all said, KTM India is yet to reveal details about its future plans to introduce the SMC nameplate. Going by the online reports, the 390 SMC could be launched in India around the festive season later this year.
