Piaggio has spent years building the Vespa brand in India. Stylish? Absolutely. Premium? Certainly. But if you wanted a Piaggio scooter that focused primarily on affordability and everyday practicality, your options are rather limited.
The company is now developing a new range of commuter scooters specifically for India, with the first products expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. This time, Piaggio is going straight for the heart of India’s scooter market.
Not developing just one scooter
According to the company’s management, the upcoming project will consist of multiple scooters built around the same India-specific platform.
The idea is to offer different products with varying equipment and feature levels rather than launch a single scooter and hope it somehow appeals to everyone. The new platform is being developed specifically for India, which should give Piaggio greater flexibility in terms of pricing, features and positioning.
The competition is brutal
The upcoming Piaggio range will go up against some of the biggest names in the Indian two-wheeler industry, including the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access.
These scooters have spent years building customer trust, extensive dealer networks and strong resale values. Piaggio, meanwhile, has largely operated in the premium scooter space with the Vespa and Aprilia.
Piaggio’s own management has acknowledged that the company has not been able to compete effectively with low-cost scooters in the past. The new range is, in many ways, an attempt to correct that.
Made in India, with exports possible
The new scooters will be manufactured at Piaggio’s facility in Baramati, Maharashtra. The company says the plant has sufficient capacity to handle production of the upcoming range.
India will be the primary focus initially, although Piaggio has not ruled out exporting the scooters to markets such as Africa in the future.
