The Suzuki SV650 is set for a significant update for 2027, with a US emissions certification confirming that the long-running middleweight will continue into the next model year. The update is particularly significant because the SV650 had been discontinued in Europe due to stricter Euro 5+ emission regulations.
The biggest change will be the 645 cc, 90-degree V-twin engine, which will now share its updated specification with the recently introduced SV-7GX. In that motorcycle, the engine produces 73.4 hp and 64 Nm.
The certification also suggests that Suzuki has incorporated the SV650 into the same engine and emissions certification as the SV-7GX. This could allow the updated motorcycle to meet European emissions requirements and potentially return to markets where it was discontinued.
More electronics could be added
Suzuki could also use the engine update as an opportunity to bring the SV650’s electronics package closer to that of the SV-7GX.
Expected additions include a ride-by-wire throttle, riding modes, traction control, a bi-directional quickshifter and a 4.2-inch TFT display. However, Suzuki has not yet confirmed which of these features will make it to the production SV650.
The certification does not reveal whether the motorcycle will receive changes to its chassis, suspension or styling. The familiar naked roadster formula, including its exposed frame and V-twin engine, could therefore remain largely intact.
The SV650 has been part of Suzuki’s international range since 1999 and has built a reputation as a relatively accessible middleweight roadster. The model was never officially sold in India, although its 645 cc engine was used in the now-discontinued V-Strom 650 XT sold here. Chances of it to come to India are relatively slim.
With the 2027 certification now in place, Suzuki could reveal the updated SV650 towards the end of this year. An EICMA 2026 debut is a possibility, considering Suzuki unveiled the SV-7GX at the same show last year.
