BMW is preparing to expand its Neue Klasse electric SUV lineup with the iX4, which has now been spotted testing in Germany. The upcoming model will be the coupe-SUV counterpart to the iX3 and is also expected to preview the next-generation X4.
What is new?
The biggest visual difference between the two electric SUVs will be the sharply sloping roofline of the iX4. Despite the sportier silhouette, the test vehicle appears to share several design elements with the iX3.
At the front, the iX4 is expected to feature a black panel housing the LED headlamps, along with BMW’s distinctive diagonal daytime running lights. The front bumper appears similar to the iX3, while the rear gets wide LED tail-lamps. The coupe SUV is likely to receive its own alloy wheel designs and a different boot-lid spoiler.
iX3-inspired interior
The iX4 is expected to carry over the basic dashboard layout of the iX3, including BMW’s new-generation digital interface. This could include a rhomboidal 17.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and the pillar-to-pillar Panoramic Vision display.
BMW could differentiate the iX4 with unique upholstery and interior colour combinations, although the company has not yet revealed the production-spec cabin.
Expected 800V architecture
Underneath, the iX4 is expected to use the same 800V architecture and 108.7kWh battery pack as the iX3.
The iX3’s dual-motor setup produces 469hp and 645Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of up to 805km. It can also support DC charging at up to 400kW, allowing a 10-80 percent charge in around 21 minutes.
The iX4 is expected to have broadly similar powertrain specifications, although BMW is yet to confirm its final output, range or charging figures.
