BMW F 450 R brings S 1000 R attitude to the 450 cc class

Key highlights

  • New BMW F 450 R gets a 420 cc parallel-twin engine producing 48 hp and 43 Nm
  • S 1000 R-inspired styling is paired with a road-focused chassis and 175 kg kerb weight
  • Four variants will be offered, with the range-topping version getting BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch

BMW Motorrad has globally unveiled the F 450 R, bringing its new 450 platform into the streetfighter segment. The naked motorcycle is the second model based on the platform after the F 450 GS and takes clear design inspiration from the larger S 1000 R.

The F 450 R gets a muscular fuel tank, compact proportions and an exposed tubular steel frame. BMW says the motorcycle has been developed specifically for road riding, with an emphasis on low weight, accessible handling and everyday usability.

Powertrain

Power comes from the same 420 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin used by the F 450 GS, but it has been tuned differently for the streetfighter. It produces 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm at 6,750 rpm and uses a 135-degree crankpin offset along with a balance shaft.

The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox. BMW claims that 80 percent of peak torque is available from 3,000rpm, while fuel consumption is rated at 3.8 litres per 100km. The motorcycle has a 14-litre fuel tank.

Road-focused hardware

The F 450 R uses a 43 mm KYB inverted fork and an aluminium swingarm with a KYB monoshock. An optional Sport Suspension package adds compression and rebound adjustment to the front and additional adjustability to the rear.

It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and gets Brembo braking hardware, dual-channel ABS and BMW’s ABS Pro system. The ready-to-ride weight is 175 kg, while the standard seat height is 790 mm.

Variants and features

BMW will offer the F 450 R in Base, Exclusive, M Sport and M Sport with Innovation Package versions.

The motorcycle gets a 6.5-inch TFT display, LED lighting, heated grips and USB-C connectivity. Riding modes include Rain, Road and Dynamic, while higher variants add Riding Modes Pro and Shift Assistant Pro. The top version also gets BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch, which can operate the clutch automatically.

BMW has not announced India launch details yet. However, the F 450 R is expected to eventually make its way to India, where it would sit alongside the F 450 GS in BMW’s growing middleweight portfolio.
