In a recent media interaction, Bajaj Auto Ltd Chief Finance Officer, Dinesh Thapar, revealed that the brand is working on the development of an electric motorcycle, which will be the brand’s first-ever electric motorcycle. It will be positioned against the likes of the Oben, Ultraviolette, etc.
The official also revealed that this electric motorcycle will be focused on the global market initially, and India later. This can be interpreted as a hint, as the global market is full of well-built, higher-spec electric two-wheelers, which makes us think that Bajaj is working on a world-class EV, rather than something that would be cost-effective.
As per the official, this electric motorcycle will be launched in FY2028 if all goes as per the planning and the scheduled timelines are met consistently. On the other hand, Bajaj’s EV portfolio currently includes the Chetak electric scooter, which has witnessed high demand in the recent past. Bajaj will soon bump its annual production from 50,000 units to 60,000 units, as the brand says that the scooter has outpaced its supply.
With that said, the electric motorcycle segment in India is fairly new. There are not many options currently, and the worthy ones are too costly. A well-built and aggressively priced electric motorcycle could change the game in India, which Bajaj might be after. Considering that the initial focus is towards the international market, this bike could also offer high-performance specs.
The interesting bit will be its body style, which we think would be a roadster. The latter is a popular body style for the electric motorcycles sold in the global market, and Bajaj could follow the same route to design it.
