Hyundai has revealed more details about the powertrain and driving technology of the upcoming Bayon ahead of its India launch on October 26, 2026. The SUV will use the company’s familiar 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated MPi petrol engine, with buyers getting a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or an Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT) automatic.
Hyundai Bayon engine
The Bayon’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder MPi petrol engine produces 115 PS (84.4kW) and 143.8 Nm of torque. Hyundai says more than six lakh vehicles equipped with this engine have been sold in India since 2020.
The engine is offered with a six-speed manual transmission or an iVT automatic. While the manual caters to buyers who prefer greater control over gear changes, the automatic gets additional features designed to make acceleration more responsive.
Dash Boost Mode
One of the key additions is Dash Boost Mode, which Hyundai says provides an immediate boost in responsiveness when quicker acceleration is required, particularly during overtaking. The system works alongside the iVT transmission to make the SUV respond more promptly to driver inputs.
The Bayon’s iVT also gets Sporty Drive Tech, which is designed to deliver a more engaging acceleration experience. Paddle shifters allow drivers to control transmission response from the steering wheel.
Three selectable drive modes further tailor the driving experience:
- Eco: Prioritises fuel efficiency.
- Normal: Balances performance and efficiency for everyday driving.
- Sport: Offers a more responsive driving experience.
The drive modes can be switched using a button on the steering wheel.
