Hyundai Motor Group announces $15.5 billion India investment through 2032

Key highlights

  • Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest $15.5 billion (approximately Rs 1.47 lakh crore) in India between 2026 and 2032.
  • The investment will cover manufacturing expansion, research and development, local suppliers and emerging mobility businesses.
  • Around $700 million is earmarked for India’s R&D operations, while the group plans to explore EV charging, automotive financing and vehicle recycling.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a $15.5 billion investment programme for India, outlining a seven-year plan to expand manufacturing, engineering and other automotive businesses. The commitment covers the group’s Indian operations, including Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, and is intended to support domestic demand as well as exports.

The announcement follows a meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 13, 2026.

The investment is not limited to new vehicles or factory expansion. It also includes research infrastructure, supplier development and businesses linked to the wider automotive ecosystem. However, Hyundai has not disclosed the complete investment split between its various operations.

Manufacturing and R&D get a major share

Hyundai Motor Group currently has combined annual manufacturing capacity of more than 1.4 million vehicles in India. This includes Hyundai’s facilities in Chennai and Pune, along with Kia’s plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

The group plans to expand production capacity to support future demand and strengthen India’s role as an export base. Capacity at the Pune facility is expected to increase in phases, although the latest announcement does not specify a final production target or confirm the location of any additional plant.

Research and development is another priority. Around $700 million is planned for the group’s Indian R&D centre, including a vehicle testing track. The investment is intended to strengthen engineering infrastructure, develop local talent and support next-generation automotive technologies.

New mobility businesses also on the agenda

The investment programme will extend beyond conventional vehicle manufacturing. Hyundai Motor Group plans to explore opportunities in automotive financing, EV charging infrastructure and end-of-life vehicle recycling.

It also intends to support start-ups, develop partnerships with local suppliers and strengthen parts localisation. A dedicated investment entity will be established in India to coordinate funding and identify potential partners.

These initiatives could expand the group’s presence across more areas of the automotive industry, although specific projects, budgets and implementation timelines have not been announced for each business.
