Skoda India to bring electric cars as limited imports next year

Key highlights

  • Skoda India plans to bring EVs as limited imports in 2027
  • The company is evaluating which electric models make the most sense for India
  • Local manufacturing of EVs could follow if demand justifies it

Skoda Auto India is considering bringing its electric vehicles to India as limited imports next year, giving it a chance to gauge customer response before making a larger commitment to the segment.

The move is significant because Skoda currently doesn’t have a fully electric passenger car on sale in India. Instead, its India portfolio continues to revolve around petrol-powered models such as the Kushaq, Slavia and Kylaq.

EVs could arrive as CBU imports

Rather than immediately setting up local production for an EV, Skoda is expected to initially use the completely built-up (CBU) import route. That approach allows the company to bring a relatively small number of cars into India without making the kind of investment required for local manufacturing.

Which Skoda EVs could come here?

Skoda has a growing international electric portfolio, including models such as the Enyaq and the newer Elroq. However, the company has not yet confirmed which specific EV or EVs will be brought to India under the limited-import strategy.

The Enyaq, for example, is a larger electric SUV and could sit in a fairly premium price bracket if imported into India. The smaller Elroq could potentially make more sense as a volume-oriented product, although its positioning and pricing would still depend heavily on import duties and equipment levels.

Skoda is therefore likely to weigh pricing, range, customer demand and the competitive landscape before finalising its India EV strategy.

Local production could come later

If the initial cars find enough buyers, the company could potentially explore a more extensive EV presence, including local assembly or manufacturing. That would be a much bigger step and would require considerably more investment. For now, importing a limited number of cars is a relatively low-risk way of testing the waters.

For now, Skoda isn’t promising an overnight EV revolution in India. Instead, it appears to be taking the “let’s see how this goes” approach.
