Tata to launch Its first flex-fuel car in India by December 2026

Key Highlights

  • Tata Motors will launch at least one flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India by end-2026 or early 2027.
  • The Punch is the most likely candidate, having been showcased as a flex-fuel concept at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo.
  • Tata’s vehicles have been E20 compliant since 2023.

Tata Motors is ready for flex-fuel. The company’s MD and CEO Shailesh Chandra confirmed this during the Q4 FY2026 earnings call. He said Tata will launch at least one flex-fuel passenger vehicle by the end of 2026, or early 2027 at the latest.

Which model could it be?

The Punch is the most likely first product. Tata showed a Punch flex-fuel concept at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo. That car used the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine as the standard Punch. The changes were in the ECU, the fuel-injection system, and the exhaust after-treatment system. These allow the car to detect and adapt to different ethanol blends. The concept was compatible with up to E100, meaning it can run on pure ethanol.

Why this matters?

India hit its E20 target in July 2025, five years ahead of schedule. The government is now pushing for higher blends, and a regulatory framework for flex-fuel vehicles is being put in place. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already proposed including E100 in testing and certification standards.

For buyers, a flex-fuel car means more choice at the pump. Ethanol is cheaper than petrol in most parts of India. It is also domestically produced, largely from sugarcane. Running on higher ethanol blends can lower fuel costs meaningfully, especially for high-mileage users.

Tata is not alone in this space. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Toyota have all showcased flex-fuel prototypes. But Tata appears to be the closest to a production launch right now.

The Punch already has petrol, CNG, and electric variants. A flex-fuel version would make it one of the most versatile cars in its segment. Pricing has not been announced, but expect it to sit close to the existing petrol variant.
