Mitsubishi has unveiled the fifth-generation Pajero SUV in the international market. The much-awaited SUV marks the return after a 5-year break in the global market. The latest Pajero will be sold as Montero in certain markets, as Mitsubishi announced it will launch it in 100 countries worldwide with a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine.

New platform, dimensions, and exterior design
The biggest upgrade on the fifth-gen Pajero is its new ladder-frame chassis that has been carried over from the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi had earlier confirmed it, and now this new chassis holds the new powertrain and drivetrain on the Pajero.
In terms of dimensions, the new Pajero measures 4,920mm in length, 1,925mm in width, 1,910mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,870mm. So, it is now bigger than before, and it falls into the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Nissan Patrol Y63 categories.
The styling of the new Pajero has been inspired by other models like the Mitsubishi Destinator and the Triton. It packs a conventional three-box styling with a big greenhouse, LED lights with a vertical slotted design pattern that are semi-connected via light bars, black front grille, rugged bumpers, chunky wheel arches, big 20-inch alloy wheels, and dual-tone colour options.
Off-road capable
With the new Pajero, Mitsubishi has not forgotten its 4×4 capabilities. The new model is based on the ladder-frame chassis that comes with the trademark Super Select 4WD-II. The latter offers various driving modes: 4H, 4L, 4HLc and 4LLc.
Mitsubishi has also reworked the frame of the SUV compared to the Triton, which has increased the stiffness and rigidity, which is more noticeable on- and off-road. It also gets a new high-mounted double-wishbone suspension and a new five-link solid rear axle, which gives it a more confident driving experience with highway stability at high speeds.
The Super-All Wheel Control offers a combined benefit of a 4×2 and a 4×4 by using electronics to send power to the four wheels depending on the requirements. It uses Active Stability, Active Yaw Control, and Traction Control to offer proper traction and driving control on any type of surface.
The new Pajero gets 230 mm of ground clearance, which is sufficient to tackle off-road. Moreover, it gets 30.4 degrees of approach angle, 22.6 degrees of breakover angle, and 25.8 degrees of departure angle. The new Pajero also comes with a 52:48 weight distribution, which ensures proper stability and less pitching.
Interior design and features
The cabin design of the new Pajero has undergone a massive change as well. The new Pajero is now a seven-seater SUV with folding second- and third-row. The third row has been specifically designed for long journeys, and it can accommodate two adults easily.
Moreover, the whole cabin is draped in a dual-tone theme, with the range-topping variants getting soft-touch leather upholstery, piano black and aluminium finish highlights. The dashboard features a dual-screen setup with 14.3-inch screens on the top variants and 12.3-inch screens on the lower variants. These screens offer off-road telemetry, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and features like AI-assisted voice commands.
The interior design of the new Pajero is a mix of luxury and off-road practicality. For example, the dashboard features a passenger grab handle, while the A-pillars have grab handles for off-roading. In contrast, the front seats are electronically adjustable and ventilated; the central console area gets an electronic parking brake and 4WD buttons, along with wireless charging; and the SUV comes with comfort and convenience features like a 12-speaker Sony sound system, Level 2 ADAS safety features, a 360-degree parking camera, an under-bonnet view camera, etc.
Clean diesel powertrain
Powering the new Mitsubishi Pajero is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that makes 201 bhp and 480 Nm. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and the Super Select 4WD-II is standard. Mitsubishi is likely to offer a petrol engine as well, but it will be limited to certain markets like the GCC and the UAE.
Launch and availability
The new Pajero will be on sale in Thailand first, followed by Japan and Australia by March 2027. Mitsubishi will sell it in 100 countries worldwide, and in some markets it will be branded as Montero. Although India launch is still not confirmed. Globally, it will rival the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Ford Everest.
