Mercedes-Benz is bringing physical control buttons back

Key highlights

  • Mercedes-Benz confirms return of physical buttons, rollers, and switches.
  • New steering wheel design debuts on 2025 GLC and CLA Shooting Brake EV.
  • Decision based on real-world feedback showing drivers prefer tactile controls.

Mercedes-Benz has hit the brakes on its all-touch interiors and is bringing physical buttons back. Starting with the 2025 GLC and CLA Shooting Brake EV, the German luxury brand will reintroduce rollers, switches, and pushable buttons into its cabins.

This isn’t a retro nod. It’s a response to real-world data. Mercedes’ software chief Magnus Östberg admitted that customers consistently found physical inputs easier and safer for frequently used features. So, after years of touch overload, the brand is finally pivoting.

What’s changing inside

The new steering wheel design is the first big move. It now gets:

  • Thumb rollers for audio and menu navigation
  • Pushable buttons for drive modes, media, and cruise control
  • Switches for driver-assist and safety features

Mercedes isn’t ditching screens though. Models like the GLC EV will still flaunt the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen. But the goal is to reduce the need for endless swipes just to tweak the AC or change tracks. It’s a blend of digital flair and physical convenience.

Different regions, different needs

Interestingly, Mercedes says the button mix will vary by market. European drivers still love their tactile controls, while Asian buyers lean toward touch and voice commands. Expect the cabin setup to shift depending on where you buy the car.

The CLA sedan launched earlier this year missed the button revival, but the update is expected soon. SUVs like the GLC, with more space to package hardware, are leading the button-heavy return.

Our thoughts

I’ll be honest, this is a relief. Luxury cars should feel intuitive, not like you’re scrolling through a smartphone while doing 100 km/h. Buttons are faster, safer, and honestly, just more satisfying to press.

I’m glad a brand like Mercedes has the courage to admit they went too far with screens. If they can hit pause and rethink, others should too.
