Volvo V90 production comes to an end

Key Highlights

  • Volvo ends production of the V90 and V90 Cross Country after nearly a decade.
  • The final unit rolled out of the Torslanda plant in Sweden and is now part of Volvo’s heritage fleet.
  • The V60 remains the brand’s only estate as Volvo pivots toward electric SUVs.

Volvo has officially bid farewell to the V90, closing the chapter on one of its most elegant and capable estates. The last V90, finished in a sleek black, rolled off the Torslanda production line in Sweden and now sits proudly in Volvo’s heritage collection in Gothenburg.

Launched in 2016, the V90 carried forward Volvo’s rich estate legacy, one that stretches back to the iconic 240, through the 850 and V70. The V90 refined that heritage with elegance, modern technology, and a serene performance that earned it admiration worldwide.

What made the V90 stand out

The V90 wasn’t just another pretty wagon. Under the hood, buyers could choose from a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with 148 hp to a twin-charged petrol engine pushing 316 hp. The real star, though, was the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid, delivering up to 455 hp while keeping emissions impressively low.

For those seeking adventure, the V90 Cross Country was the answer. With all-wheel drive, raised suspension, and rugged cladding, it handled snow, gravel, or winding mountain roads with ease.

Inside, the V90 was pure Volvo: minimalist, airy, and crafted with care. Soft leather, natural wood trims, and an uncluttered cabin gave it a calm sophistication, while Volvo’s top-tier safety and intuitive infotainment made it feel thoughtful rather than flashy.

Why Volvo said goodbye

The end of the V90 isn’t a shock. Volvo is increasingly focusing on electric vehicles and SUVs, the segments driving its global growth. Just as the S90 sedan is making way for the all-electric ES90 liftback, the V90 now steps aside to make room for new EVs like the EX90 and XC60 Recharge.

The V60 continues for now, but even it faces an uncertain future as Volvo fine-tunes its lineup toward efficiency and electrification. The era of the longroof may be quietly fading, but it leaves behind memories of practical beauty and understated elegance.
