Everything to know about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV
Exterior design and platform
The new C-Class EV is based on a dedicated EV 800V platform. It shares its underpinnings with the GLC EV crossover, but the platform is all-new. In comparison to the petrol version, it is 97 mm longer and offers more interior legroom for passengers.
On the outside, it features a unique optional illuminated grille with 162 LEDs and an illuminated Mercedes logo. The Digital Lights boast the star design, while the sculpted bumper at the front gets big air dams in the lower portion.
The side profile is dominated by the sloping roofline and the aerodynamic alloy wheels. The retractable door handles further add to the streamlined design of the car.
The rear design is different and interesting, as it features the twin oval LED taillights with a star logo, which are connected via a black highlight and an illuminated Mercedes star logo on the boot. The rear design is identical to the CLA EV concept.
Interior and features
Mercedes has already unveiled the interior design of the C-Class electric. It is the first Mercedes model to feature the connected 39.1-inch full-width Hyperscreen. Although it is optional, it replaces the physical control buttons for the HVAC and other features.
The standard fitment will include the triple screen layout, aka Superscreen, which boasts dual 14-inch infotainment screens and a 10.3-inch digital driver console. The new steering wheel features a flat-bottom design and physical control buttons.
There is ample use of leather all around the cabin, while the brushed aluminium highlights can be seen on the door pads, AC vents, door handles, power window buttons, and on the centre console. Mercedes will offer the interior in different optional layouts, including the sustainable material options.
Battery specifications, range, performance
Powering the C-Class EV is a 94 kWh battery pack sourced from the GLC EV. However, with its more aerodynamic design, the C-Class EV offers more range than its crossover counterpart.
The introductory variant of the electric C-Class is the C400 4MATIC, which churns out 484 bhp and 800 Nm. It is paired to a 2-speed transmission and offers 762 km of WLPT-claimed range.
The C-Class EV supports up to 330 kW of fast charging, which can add 325 km of range in just 10 minutes. Mercedes also plans to introduce a rear-wheel drive version with more range in the future.
Other key highlights include the rear-wheel steering taken from the S-Class. It turns the rear tyres in the opposite direction of the front tyres up to 70 km/h, and in the same direction above 70 km/h. This system improves turning radius, control, and handling.
The C-Class also comes with an optional Adaptive Air Suspension system. The brand claims that this optional system offers a carpet-like ride quality similar to the S-Class.
India launch and price
Mercedes-Benz is yet to reveal the India launch timeline of the C-Class EV. We suspect that it could be introduced by the end of this year. Mind you, the brand has been struggling with poor EV sales globally.
