Mahindra is working on an update for the Scorpio N, and the facelifted SUV has now been spotted testing in India. Although the prototype is heavily camouflaged, the test mule provides the first indication of how Mahindra could evolve the popular SUV.
The biggest changes appear to be concentrated at the front. The prototype uses temporary circular headlamps, but the positioning of the lighting elements and the overall shape of the fascia suggest that the facelift could borrow design cues from the recently unveiled Scorpio Lifestyler pickup.
The Lifestyler features a wider and more aggressive front end with slim lighting elements, a large grille and a muscular bumper. Mahindra is unlikely to copy the pickup’s design directly, but some of these elements could find their way onto the Scorpio N.
The connection is significant because Mahindra’s design chief Pratap Bose has previously indicated that the Lifestyler’s design language would influence the Scorpio family and future products.
Side profile largely unchanged
Despite the extensive camouflage at the front, the Scorpio N’s familiar silhouette appears to remain intact. The doors, window line, upright greenhouse and overall proportions look largely unchanged.
The test vehicle is running on steel wheels, which is typical of development prototypes. The production SUV is expected to get newly designed alloy wheels. Changes to the rear have not been clearly established yet, although revised tail-lamp and bumper detailing cannot be ruled out.
Interior could get a major update
The interior could see more substantial changes. Mahindra could use the facelift to introduce a larger infotainment screen, revised digital instrumentation and newer connected and safety features.
The Scorpio Lifestyler’s more modern cabin, including its portrait-oriented touchscreen and redesigned dashboard, could provide some inspiration. However, it remains unclear how much of that design will make it to the Scorpio N.
The existing 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines are expected to continue, along with manual and automatic transmission options. Four-wheel drive is also expected to remain available with the diesel.
