Mercedes-Benz to retain the physical buttons – Here’s why

In a recent interview, Mathias Geisen revealed that the luxury car brand Mercedes is working on restoring the physical button controls in its future models for the essential features. This statement comes after the brand has recently revealed its biggest-ever 39.1-inch Superscreen display in the new C-Class EV.

However, the brand will not simply eliminate the screens, but it will smartly integrate the new digital footprint, which will offer high levels of customisation for the interiors. The latter has begun with the wallpaper feature on the C-Class EV’s Hyperscreen setup, which customers can use to put the photo of their family members, pets, and anyone they love.

The main focus of the digital screen evolution will be on the customised experience. However, the physical button controls for the essential features like AC controls, cruise control, and steering-mounted controls will be restored to offer ease of use.

Mathias also revealed that the brand has been consistently listening to what customers have to say about their latest purchase. Over the period, the feedback is that customers do love the big screens, but they want the physical controls for the necessary features to keep things simple.

Advancing in the same direction, Mercedes has recently introduced the rocker-type physical button controls on the steering wheels of the new GLC EV and the C-Class EV. This move came after the customer feedback itself.

Meanwhile, the brand’s primary rival Audi has announced that it is moving back to the timeless design and it will reduce the screen size going forward. This move also comes after the new restrictions imposed by the Chinese government, where Audi is among the top-selling luxury brands.
