Maruti Suzuki India has launched the new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom).
The new model is designed to operate on a wide range of fuel blends, including petrol and ethanol mixes of up to 85 percent ethanol (E85), making it one of the few flex-fuel passenger cars currently available in the Indian market.
What is a flex-fuel vehicle?
Unlike conventional petrol cars that are designed to run on a fixed fuel blend, flex-fuel vehicles can automatically adapt to different ethanol concentrations.
The Wagon R Flex Fuel can run on:
- Regular petrol
- E20 fuel
- E50 fuel
- E85 fuel
The engine management system continuously adjusts ignition timing and fuel delivery depending on the ethanol concentration present in the fuel tank.
This allows drivers to use whichever approved fuel blend is available without making any manual changes.
What’s different from the standard Wagon R?
The flex-fuel Wagon R is based on the familiar LXI trim but receives several modifications to ensure compatibility with higher ethanol content.
Key changes include:
- Ethanol-compatible fuel system components
- Revised engine calibration
- Modified fuel injectors
- Upgraded fuel pump and fuel lines
- Engine management software capable of detecting fuel blends
Visually, the car remains largely identical to the standard Wagon R sold in India.
Engine and specifications
The Wagon R Flex Fuel uses Maruti Suzuki’s proven 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
