BMW has finally taken the cover off its new fifth-generation X5 SUV. The new model is based on the Neue Klasse design philosophy, and it will be offered with five powertrain options globally.

The fifth-generation X5 is now based on the brand’s latest Neue Klasse design language. The overall silhouette of the new X5 does resemble the outgoing model, but it has been significantly updated.

The front design packs the new LED daytime running lights in an ‘X’ shape, which are connected by a piano black grille and the iconic kidney grille design. The front bumper boasts aggressive cuts for aero dams and a big lower grille. BMW has equipped the new X5 with adaptive LED headlights that get the ‘Selective Beam’ technology, along with cornering lights and matrix high beam.

The side profile features a big greenhouse with sleek body panels, flush door handles, and flared fenders. The B-pillar is blacked out, while the new alloy wheels range from 21 to 23 inches depending on the variant opted for.

At the back, the new model features a sporty design. It is equipped with a big roof-mounted spoiler that merges into the rear quarter panel with gloss black highlights. The raked rear windshield is mated to the new upright boot with a connected LED taillight setup, and a sporty bumper with big glossy black highlights.

Customers can choose from 11 exterior colours, while the body kit gets aggressive with the M-Sport variants. The new X5 measures as follows:

  • Length – 4,994 mm
  • Width – 2,000 mm
  • Height – 1,751 mm
  • Wheelbase – 3,035 mm
  • Boot space – 655 litres (expandable up to 1,850 litres)

The cabin design of the new X5 is completely new, and it is an evolved version of the new-gen BMW X3’s design. Step inside, and you are greeted by the new BMW Panoramic iDrive Display full-width screen that displays all the data about the car in real-time.

Then there is this curved dashboard that boasts a big diagonal 17.9-inch floating infotainment screen, a new four-spoke steering wheel, a 3D head-up display, and an optional passenger screen. The cabin upholstery also gets the slate and glass material enhancements, which uplift the overall luxury quotient of the SUV.

Meanwhile, the new seats offer superb cushioning, and customers can opt for the sports seats with the M-Sport variants. The cabin is highlighted by a big panoramic sunroof, new customisable LED cabin lights, and features like AI-assisted voice commands, multi-functional seats with massage, ventilation, heated options, and over-the-air updates for the infotainment system.

Music lovers will appreciate the new Bowers & Wilkins sound system upgrade that gets the Dolby Atmos update. There is also a new four-zone automatic climate control system that is touch-operated by the rear passengers.

BMW has also equipped the new X5 with Level 2 ADAS safety features. These include adaptive cruise control, pedestrian collision avoidance, adaptive headlights, high-beam assist, traffic sign recognition, lane monitoring system, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, etc.

Another big change that the new X5 brings with it is the five different powertrains. BMW will offer the fifth-gen X5 in petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and even a hydrogen-powered option. These versions will be segregated as follows:

  1. X5 40 xDrive Petrol (mild-hybrid): 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbo with 48V hybrid motor, 394 bhp and 580 Nm
  2. X5 40d xDrive Diesel: 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbo diesel, 313 bhp and 670 Nm
  3. X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid: 3.0-litre turbo petrol mated to an electric motor, 489 bhp and 700 Nm, 102 km electric range
  4. X5 M60e xDrive plug-in hybrid: Same engine as the 50e variant but makes 612 bhp and 800 Nm, 102 km electric range
  5. iX5 electric: 141 kWh battery, 800V architecture, 460 kW DC charging support, 578 bhp and 805 Nm, 845 km WLTP range, 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, 210 km/h top speed
  6. iX5 Hydrogen: Developed with Toyota, features two carbon fibre tanks to store hydrogen fuel, produces 410 bhp

Along with the new engine options, the new X5 also features a revised chassis, adaptive air suspension, and an adaptive chassis control system.

When will the new BMW X5 launch?

BMW has revealed that the petrol and diesel versions of the fifth-gen X5 will go on sale by November 2026 in the global market. Meanwhile, the electric iX5 and the plug-in hybrid versions will be launched in 2027. We expect that the new-gen X5 will be introduced in India later this year.
