The MG Hector Plus has finally got its diesel engine back. Seven months after the facelift was launched, MG has added a diesel variant to the seven-seat SUV range.
Priced at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), the Hector Plus 2.0 Diesel is available in a new Sharp Pro (O) trim. It sits below the top-spec Savvy Pro and gets a fairly generous equipment list.
Diesel power, manual gearbox only
The familiar 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 168 BHP and 350 Nm. However, there is no automatic option like before. MG has paired it exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
That should appeal to buyers who still prefer the relaxed highway performance and strong low-end torque of a diesel, particularly in a large seven-seat SUV.
Plenty of kit on offer
The new Sharp Pro (O) gets LED headlights with DRLs, LED fog lamps, connected LED tail-lights and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, there is a dual-tone cabin with leatherette upholstery, a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8-inch digital instrument cluster.
MG has also packed in ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and an 8-speaker Infinity audio system with subwoofer and amplifier. Safety equipment includes six airbags and TPMS, while a rear parking camera and auto-dimming IRVM are also included.
At Rs 20 lakh, the Hector Plus diesel isn’t exactly cheap. But for buyers who want a large seven-seater with a proper diesel engine and manual gearbox, the return of the oil-burner gives the MG another reason to be considered.
In terms of competition, it goes up against the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Scorpio N and the Tata Safari. The absence of an automatic gear box might veer some buyers away from the Hector Plus diesel. However, we feel it will be a hit with the fleet operators.
