Yamaha’s latest motorcycle, the YZF-R2, has started arriving at dealers in India. The brand is likely to commence deliveries of the first batch to customers soon.
The YZF-R2 is priced from Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom), and it is available in three variants: YZF-R2 (standard), YZF-R2 QS (quickshifter), and the YZF-R2M. All three variants are based on a new frame and a new 204cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that makes 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox that comes with a slipper-assist clutch and a bi-directional quickshifter (optional).
The YZF-R2 is based on the USD front suspension and a preload-adjustable monoshock rear suspension. The bike rides on 17-inch alloys and comes with disc brakes and a dual-channel ABS with switchable rear ABS.
In terms of features, it gets a projector LED headlight, LED turn indicators, and an LED taillight. The instrument console features a 5-inch TFT screen that offers Bluetooth connectivity, ride modes, and smart features like navigation support, SMS and call alerts, etc.
The new YZF-R2 weighs only 149 kg, which makes it significantly lighter than the KTM RC 200, which weighs 160 kg. The power-to-weight ratio of the R2 makes it a better value-for-money proposition than the KTM, on paper.
With that said, the R2 is the next big upgrade for the R15 users, as it offers a big power jump and more electronics. Meanwhile, the KTM RC 200 offers more features, but it is less on power and performance when compared to the YZF-R2.
With the bike now arriving at dealers, we expect that Yamaha will soon start delivering it to the customers who booked the R2 in the first batch.
