BMW is adding another version to its X1 family in India. The X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) petrol is set to make its Indian debut on August 21, giving buyers another option alongside the existing X1 and electric iX1 LWB.

The LWB version is expected to retain the familiar X1 design, but with a stretched wheelbase. The existing iX1 LWB measures 4,616 mm long and has a 2,800 mm wheelbase, which is 108 mm longer between the axles than the standard iX1.
That extra length is primarily aimed at improving rear-seat accommodation. And while the X1 may be BMW’s smallest SUV in India, its buyers are still likely to expect a properly premium experience for passengers sitting behind them.
The LWB version should also continue with the X1’s familiar dashboard layout, digital displays and connected technology. The standard India-spec X1 already gets features such as a panoramic glass roof, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance and a digital cockpit.
Petrol power for the LWB
The petrol version is expected to use BMW’s 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. In the current India-spec X1, this motor produces around 134 hp and is paired with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The current X1 petrol is front-wheel drive, which is likely to remain the case with the LWB petrol version as well.
BMW has not yet revealed the complete specifications, features or price of the upcoming model. These details should be announced closer to the launch.
The X1 LWB petrol will also have an interesting positioning within BMW’s India range. It combines the relatively compact footprint of an entry-level luxury SUV with the kind of rear-seat space traditionally associated with larger cars.
