The Austrian manufacturer has confirmed that it is working on new RC 490 and RC 790 motorcycles, giving its fully faired range a much-needed expansion.
The RC 490 is the interesting one
The RC 490 has been talked about for years. KTM had originally planned a 490 cc twin-cylinder platform before shelving the project in 2023. The company had then shifted focus towards a larger 690 cc platform. Now, however, the idea of a KTM sub-500 cc twin is back.
Recent reports suggest that the new 490 platform is being developed by Bajaj Auto in India, with production expected at Bajaj’s Chakan facility. The platform is expected to spawn more than just the RC, with Duke and Adventure versions also reportedly in the works.
That could make the RC 490 particularly important for Indian enthusiasts. A locally developed and manufactured twin-cylinder KTM could potentially sit neatly between the current 390 range and the larger 790 family.
There is no confirmed power figure yet, so it would be premature to attach a number to the RC 490. Earlier reports had suggested the new engine could be designed around the sub-500cc category, but KTM has not revealed its final specifications.
RC 790 moves up the ladder
The RC 790, meanwhile, will sit considerably higher in KTM’s performance hierarchy. It is expected to share its basic engine architecture with the 799 cc LC8c platform used by the 790 Duke. KTM has recently updated the 790 Duke with revised ergonomics, suspension, braking hardware and styling, while retaining its 799 cc parallel-twin engine. The new RC 790 is therefore likely to bring the same twin-cylinder performance into a fully faired package.
For India, though, there is still a big question mark. KTM has not confirmed whether either motorcycle will be launched here. The RC 490 appears far more relevant to our market, especially if Bajaj handles development and manufacturing locally.
