BYD Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV: Everything to know

In a major event yesterday, BYD revealed its first plug-in hybrid model for Indian consumers. It is badged as BYD Seal U, and it is scheduled to launch officially by the end of this year.

The Seal U is based on a trademarked ‘DM-i Super Hybrid’ technology of the brand. It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine along with an 18.3 kWh battery pack. This engine is claimed to offer the highest thermal efficiency of up to 43.04 per cent.

With this technology, the Seal U is claimed to deliver a fuel economy of 100km per 4.8 litres of fuel. This equates to a total range of 1,200 km on a full tank. Meanwhile, if the battery pack is fully charged, this SUV can run up to 200 km on full EV mode.

Adding more to it is its capability to change between the driving modes. It can automatically drive in pure electric mode, series hybrid mode, and parallel hybrid mode, depending on the situation and the battery charge. The architecture of the Seal U also allows for vehicle-to-load or V2L charging option.

Now speaking about its size, the Seal U belongs to the same category as the Mahindra XEV 9e. It measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. It is a five-seater SUV, and it comes with a similar interior layout to the Sealion 7, which is already sold in India.

Interior features include a panoramic sunroof, a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment screen, an Infinity sound system, wireless phone connectivity, wireless charging, ventilated seats with electric adjustment, Level 2 ADAS, an electric tailgate, and more.

The Seal U PHEV will be positioned around Rs 45-50 lakh. It will compete with the upcoming Jetour T2 PHEV.
