Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working on a new small electric car for the Indian market, aimed at bringing its EV technology to a much wider audience. The upcoming model is expected to sit below the recently launched e Vitara and could target the crucial Rs 10 lakh price point.
The development comes as the affordable EV segment starts gaining momentum. The 2026 Tata Tiago EV currently starts at Rs 6.99 lakh and offers 19.2kWh and 24kWh battery options, with claimed ranges of 226 km and 285 km, respectively.
Maruti’s small EV could be a dedicated model
Unlike some existing electric cars that are essentially electrified versions of ICE models, Maruti’s upcoming small EV is reportedly being developed as a dedicated electric vehicle.
This approach should allow Maruti Suzuki to optimise the packaging around the electric powertrain, particularly the battery placement and cabin space. The company is also expected to focus heavily on localisation and cost control, which will be crucial if it wants to get close to the Rs 10 lakh mark.
There is no word yet on the car’s final name, dimensions, battery capacity or claimed range.
Could use Maruti’s Arena network
 The upcoming EV could eventually be sold through Maruti Suzuki’s Arena dealership network, rather than being restricted to the company’s premium Nexa outlets. That would give the model access to Maruti’s extensive retail network and potentially make electric mobility accessible to buyers in smaller cities and towns as well.
Maruti has already entered the EV market with the e Vitara, but a sub-Rs 10 lakh model would represent a significantly more important step in terms of volumes. It would also put the company directly against affordable EVs such as the Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.
Final Thoughts
Maruti Suzuki has taken its time entering the EV space, but a small, affordable electric car could be the model that really changes the company’s EV story. If Maruti can combine its massive localisation capabilities, familiar ownership experience and competitive pricing with a practical range, this upcoming EV could become a serious threat to the Tiago EV.
