- Camouflaged Seltos Hybrid spotted testing in the Alps
- Expected to use Kia’s new self-charging strong hybrid powertrain
- India launch likely in 2027
The new Seltos Hybrid has been spotted testing in the Alps, suggesting that development is progressing well ahead of its expected global debut.
While the test mule remains heavily camouflaged, it confirms one important thing that Kia is preparing a hybrid version of the new Seltos, and India is expected to be one of the markets on its launch roadmap.
Familiar shape, new powertrain
At first glance, the test mule doesn’t reveal much. The overall silhouette remains unmistakably Seltos, although the camouflage hides most of the design details.
Like the standard Seltos, the hybrid is expected to get a more upright front fascia, redesigned LED lighting and a sharper rear profile. However, the biggest changes will be underneath the skin rather than on it.
The SUV is expected to use Kia-Hyundai’s self-charging strong hybrid system, eliminating the need for external charging. Instead, the battery will recharge through regenerative braking and energy recovery while driving.
Spy shots have also revealed what appears to be an underfloor battery enclosure, further strengthening speculation that this is indeed the hybrid version.
Better efficiency
While Kia has not officially confirmed technical specifications, the Seltos Hybrid is widely expected to use a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an automatic transmission. The combined output is likely to be around 140 hp, with the focus shifting towards fuel efficiency rather than outright performance.
India launch on the cards
Kia has already confirmed that the Seltos will receive a hybrid powertrain for India, with localisation playing a key role in keeping costs under control. Industry reports suggest the hybrid variant could arrive here sometime in 2027, after Kia introduces another hybrid model in its line-up.
With rivals such as the Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara and the upcoming Hyundai Creta Hybrid strengthening the hybrid SUV space, the Seltos Hybrid could be one of Kia’s most important launches over the next year. If priced competitively, it would finally give Seltos buyers the option of better fuel efficiency without making the jump to a full electric vehicle.
