STUDDS-owned SMK premium helmet brand has achieved yet another milestone. The brand’s Typhoon helmet model was recently sent for the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) in the UK for a safety rating, and it received a 4-star rating in the final result.
Priced from Rs 5,200 in India, the Typhoon is one of the most popular SMK helmets. It is sold in multiple shell sizes, and its core shell has been made from EIRT, or Energy Impact Resistant Thermoplastic material. It weighs 1,675g, and it also uses multi-density EPS construction.
As per the published report by SHARP, the helmet performed well in the conducted crash tests. At low impact speeds of 6 m/s, the helmet received the highest indicated performance in the tests. Meanwhile, at higher impact speeds of 7.5 m/s and 8.5 m/s, the performance varied across the side and top, while the front and rear received strong results.
SMK has also announced that the Typhoon is the first Indian helmet to receive a 4-star SHARP rating. This comes nothing short of a milestone for the helmet manufacturing industry of India, as domestic buyers were previously dependent on foreign brands to get the safest helmets.
Mind you, the SHARP rating does not mean that the helmet is bulletproof. In fact, SHARP itself states that a tested helmet can also fail in a harsh or unexpected condition. Hence, it is up to the buyers to choose the optimum performance and safety combination while purchasing a new helmet.
The Typhoon is available in various colours and graphics, including gloss and matte shades. Customers can buy it via the official SMK dealerships (offline), or order via SMK’s official retail partners and the brand’s website.
