Suzuki is developing a new direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine for growth markets, with India specifically identified as one of its target markets. The engine, referred to as DITC, is part of Suzuki’s wider powertrain strategy that includes hybrids, EVs and alternative fuels.
New turbo engine focuses on performance and efficiency
Suzuki has not revealed the engine’s displacement, power, torque or launch timeline. It has also not confirmed which Maruti Suzuki model will get the new engine first.
The focus, however, is clear. Suzuki wants the DITC engine to deliver stronger driving performance while reducing fuel consumption. Direct injection and turbocharging can help extract more performance from a relatively compact engine, while allowing greater control over fuel delivery.
The development comes as Suzuki continues to invest in internal-combustion technology despite expanding its hybrid and electric vehicle portfolio. The company says different powertrain technologies will be used according to the energy sources, infrastructure and customer requirements of individual markets.
Suzuki targeting 50% thermal efficiency
Suzuki is also working to significantly improve the efficiency of its petrol engines. The company currently targets around 40% thermal efficiency and is researching technologies that could push this towards 50%.
The research includes measures such as lean combustion, waste-heat recovery and reducing friction and energy losses through the cooling, exhaust and air-intake systems. Suzuki has also used learnings from its Z12E engine in this development work.
For India, the new turbo-petrol engine will complement Suzuki’s broader multi-pathway strategy. The company continues to develop CNG, biogas and hybrid technologies, while also preparing battery-electric vehicles.
Final thoughts
The DITC engine could give Maruti Suzuki a much-needed modern turbo-petrol option as Indian buyers increasingly look for stronger performance without giving up fuel efficiency. For now, though, the important details remain under wraps. Which model gets it, and how powerful it will be, are still open questions.
