Tata Motors is expanding its vehicle scrapping network with the opening of a new Re.Wi.Re (Recycle With Respect) facility in Patna, Bihar. The registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) is designed to safely dismantle end-of-life vehicles and can handle vehicles from all brands and segments, including two- and three-wheelers.
Scrapping capacity
Spread across 5.5 acres, the facility has the capacity to scrap up to 15,000 vehicles every year. It is operated by the Kalahanu Bothra Group and was inaugurated by Bihar’s Transport Minister, Damodar Rawat.
The facility is part of the wider push towards organised vehicle scrappage in India. Instead of old and unfit vehicles simply disappearing into informal dismantling networks, registered facilities are meant to provide a more structured way of taking them off the road.
It isn’t just for Tata vehicles
One of the more important details is that the Patna facility isn’t restricted to Tata products. Owners can bring end-of-life passenger and commercial vehicles from any brand, as well as two- and three-wheelers.
The Re.Wi.Re facility is fully digitalised and paperless, with dedicated dismantling areas for different vehicle types. Commercial vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers are dismantled using a cell-type system, while passenger vehicles use a line-type dismantling process.
There are also dedicated stations for handling components such as tyres, batteries, fuel, oils, liquids and gases. Tata Motors says every vehicle goes through a detailed documentation and dismantling process, with components disposed of safely in line with the country’s vehicle scrappage policy.
Tata Motors now has 12 scrapping centres
The Patna facility takes Tata Motors’ Re.Wi.Re network to 12 locations across India. The company already operates facilities in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Pune, Guwahati, Raipur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
Together, Tata Motors says its network can responsibly dismantle close to 2 lakh end-of-life vehicles annually.
For Bihar, the new facility should make organised vehicle scrappage more accessible. For Tata Motors, it is another step towards building a nationwide ecosystem around the end of a vehicle’s life because even cars eventually have to retire.
