Volvo has unveiled major updates for its XC40, EX40 and EC40, giving the three compact SUVs a more modern design, upgraded infotainment and a significantly revised safety package. The updates are part of Volvo’s effort to bring its older 40-series models closer to the design and technology seen on its newer-generation products.
What is new?
The facelift brings the most noticeable changes to the front end. All three models get redesigned Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, along with a revised grille, bonnet, front bumper and front wings. The XC40 and EX40 also receive new LED tail-lights, a redesigned tailgate and rear bumper, while the EC40 retains its existing rear-end design. New 18, 19 and 20-inch wheel designs are also available on the XC40.
The bigger changes are inside. The 40-series models now feature an 11.2-inch high-resolution touchscreen running Volvo’s latest infotainment interface. The system also integrates Google Gemini, allowing occupants to use voice commands for tasks such as route planning, finding locations and managing messages. Volvo says the new interface is designed to require fewer taps for commonly used functions.
Safety technology has also received a substantial upgrade. The refreshed models get a new sensor suite comprising additional radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors. These support enhanced collision avoidance, emergency braking, lane assistance and parking functions. A 360-degree camera is also available, depending on the market and specification.
The EX40 and EC40 remain fully electric. Volvo quotes preliminary WLTP ranges of up to 575km for the EX40 and 584 km for the EC40. The company says the updated models will also continue receiving software and feature improvements through over-the-air updates.
For India, the situation is less straightforward. The EC40 is currently sold here, while the XC40 was discontinued and the EX40 is no longer part of Volvo India’s current lineup. There is no confirmed India launch timeline for the facelifted 40-series models yet.
