Key hihlights
- Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID Cross electric crossover
- It is the brand’s first compact electric SUV
- Offered with two battery options and up to 427 km of WLTP range
Volkswagen has expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the debut of the ID Cross, a compact electric crossover positioned above the ID Polo hatchback. Built on Volkswagen’s latest MEB+ platform, the ID Cross combines the practicality of an SUV with the brand’s new-generation EV technology.
The model has already gone on sale in select global markets and is expected to play a key role in Volkswagen’s growing affordable EV portfolio.
Rugged styling with SUV appeal
The ID Cross adopts Volkswagen’s latest ‘Pure Positive’ design language but adds a tougher, more upright stance than the ID Polo.
At the front, it features connected LED headlamps, an illuminated Volkswagen logo and a wide black fascia. Chunky body cladding, silver skid-plate style inserts and muscular bumpers give it a more SUV-like appearance.
From the side, black wheel arch cladding, 18-inch alloy wheels and a distinctive three-slat panel behind the rear doors help distinguish it from its hatchback sibling. The rear gets a full-width LED light bar, roof spoiler and sculpted bumper.
Measuring 4,153 mm long, the ID Cross is larger than the ID Polo in every key dimension, offering a more spacious cabin and improved practicality.
Familiar cabin with premium features
Inside, the layout is largely shared with the ID Polo.
A 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage, accompanied by a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a two-spoke steering wheel. Volkswagen has also retained physical controls for key functions, a welcome move at a time when many manufacturers are shifting entirely to touch-based interfaces.
Other highlights include:
- 360-degree camera
- Dual-zone climate control
- Heated front seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality
- 12-way powered front seats
- Auto Park Assist
- ADAS suite
- 475-litre boot
Buyers can also opt for a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic glass roof and massage function for the front seats.
Two battery options on offer
The ID Cross is available with 37 kWh and 52 kWh battery packs, both driving a front-mounted electric motor that produces 290 Nm of torque.
The smaller battery is offered in two states of tune, producing 116 hp or 135 hp, while the larger battery develops 211 hp. Volkswagen claims a WLTP-certified range of up to 427 km with the 52 kWh battery pack.
Charging is equally impressive. The 37 kWh battery supports 90 kW DC fast charging, while the larger battery can charge at up to 105 kW, with both packs capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 24 minutes.
The ID Cross looks like an ideal product for India. However, Volkswagen has not yet commented if this will make its way here. Fingers crossed.
