JSW Group has entered India’s electric commercial mobility space with the launch of AMPSTAR, a new brand under JSW Greentech Limited. The company will design, engineer, manufacture and sell electric buses and trucks in India, with its vehicles being developed specifically for local operating conditions.
What is AMPSTAR?
AMPSTAR is being positioned as a full-stack electric commercial mobility solution, rather than simply a vehicle manufacturer. The offering will include charging infrastructure, operating solutions, financing and after-sales support. Customers will also be able to choose between outright purchase, leasing, Battery as a Service (BaaS) and other ownership models.
The vehicles will be manufactured at JSW Greentech’s new 90-acre facility at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The plant will have an annual capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks. It will feature an automated truck-cabin line, an integrated battery ecosystem and what the company describes as India’s first pre-treatment and electro-deposition process for bus manufacturing.
JSW Greentech says the vehicles will use in-house developed drivetrain logic, software and algorithms, allowing the company to customise the electric powertrain for different customer requirements. The vehicles will also feature a double-cooling battery system and high-strength monocoque chassis designed for India’s climate and road conditions. Power configurations will range from 150kW to 500kW.
On the bus side, AMPSTAR’s future portfolio will cover 7-metre to 18-metre buses, targeting staff transportation, city, intercity and school applications. The company will initially enter the truck segment with a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, with tippers and fixed-body dumpers planned to follow.
The company is also developing an R&D centre in Pune and says its approach will combine in-house engineering, localisation and global technology partnerships.
