Range Rover Sport Electric: What do we know so far?
The upcoming electric version of the Range Rover Sport was recently previewed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The upcoming EV attracted a lot of attention, as a lot of buyers await its launch, which is scheduled for September this year.
Visually, the EV version is identical to the ICE version, which is currently on sale. Range Rover does not want its buyers to feel the unnecessary modern or futuristic EV styling; rather, it wants the customers to feel the plush luxury and performance of the modern Range Rovers, but in an electric form. Hence, you won’t find the typical EV styling cues like a closed grille, or covered lightweight alloys, etc.
There were two prototypes that were previewed at Goodwood. Both SUVs featured the same styling as the ICE version. However, the main change is underneath, where the Sport Electric features an all-new JLR MLA platform. This architecture allows an 118.5 kWh battery pack and dual electric motors that offer up to 550 bhp of power. Now this is more than the ICE version, which indicates that the performance could be in the same bracket as an SVR model. But its 2,700 kg of kerb weight could be a major drawback.
Range Rover engineers have also equipped it with regenerative braking, but sadly it won’t offer any “one-pedal” driving option, which we see on Korean electric cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Interestingly, Range Rover has been testing its EV powertrain on harsh testing grounds like the UAE sand dunes, which indicates that the brand is not taking its performance and durability lightly.
Since the Range Rover Sport EV will be competing with Chinese rivals like BYD Tang 9 and more, it will be equipped with a plush and tech-laden interior. The prototype shows that the EV version will carry forward the same suite of electronics, features, and interior design as its ICE version – which is a positive attribute for most buyers.
The Sport EV will be eventually launched in India, but we suspect that it will happen around late 2026. Moreover, being an EV means it will be priced significantly higher than the ICE version. So, we are expecting a price tag of somewhere around Rs 2.5 crore.
