Volkswagen brings hybrid powertrains to the Golf and T-Roc

Key highlights

  • Volkswagen Golf and T-Roc will get a strong-hybrid powertrain in international markets
  • Two electric motors will be powered by a 1.6 kWh battery
  •  Will be available internationally in the third quarter of CY2026

Volkswagen Group has announced that they will be introducing a new strong-hybrid powertrain unit. This unit will come first to the international-spec Golf GTi and the T-Roc. These new models will be launched in the third quarter of CY2026 i.e. between October and December of this year.

What to expect?

The new powertrain will be paired with a new 1.5L Evo2 TSi power unit. The petrol engine is not completely new however it will be modified. The modification will help the engine charge the 1.6 kWh battery. The range has not been specified however, the electric motor can go up to a speed of 60 kmph in EV only mode. When the speed exceeds, the car switches to the petrol engine and the electric motor acts as a booster for quicker acceleration.

The setup includes two electric motors mounted on the front axle. The battery is housed in the rear floor of the cars.

The strong-hybrid motors will be available in two states of tune. One produces 138 bhp while the other is a more powerful 172 bhp. It is likely that the T-Roc will get the lower power variant while the Golf GTi will get the higher one.

Will they come to India?

Volkswagen has not yet confirmed if this powertrain will make its way to India. These cars will be launched internationally. However, we could see the Golf coming to India next year when the next batch for India is announced. Also, the Taigun has already got its facelift in India. That makes the arrival chances of a hybrid Taigun or Virtus in India very slim. At least in the near future. These engines will likely make it to the Taigun and Virtus when we get a generation update which should probably be sometime next year.
