Mig La becomes World’s Highest Motorable Road at 19,400 ft

Key highlights

  • Mig La in Ladakh now holds the title of world’s highest motorable road at 19,400 ft.
  • Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Himank.
  • Surpasses Umling La (19,024 ft) and sets a new Guinness World Record.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has done it again. Ladakh’s Mig La Pass now holds the title of the world’s highest motorable road, sitting at an unbelievable 19,400 ft (5,913 m) above sea level. That’s higher than the base camp of Mount Everest. The feat dethrones Umling La (19,024 ft) and earns India another Guinness World Record in high-altitude engineering.

Built under Project Himank, the Mig La road connects Likaru to Fukche, near the Line of Actual Control. At that altitude, where even breathing feels like cardio, the BRO carved out a route that’ll serve both the military and the local communities that call this rugged corner of Ladakh home.

Why Mig La is more than just a record?

Mig La links Hanle to Fukche, two regions that often go radio-silent during brutal winters. With this new road, supplies, aid, and troops can move faster—and locals finally have reliable access to essential services year-round.

Led by Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, the BRO team worked through oxygen-starved air, freezing winds, and terrain that shifts with every sunrise. Building a road at 19,000+ feet isn’t just difficult, it’s borderline madness. But they pulled it off, one rock and one frostbite at a time.

Adventure calling at 19,400 feet

Of course, it’s not just the military that’s celebrating. For travellers, bikers, and off-road fanatics, Mig La is the new bucket-list climb. The route promises landscapes that look like they belong on Mars, plus enough bragging rights to last a lifetime.

With Khardung La, Umling La, and now Mig La, India isn’t just leading in high-altitude infrastructure, it’s owning it. Each project pushes the limits of what’s possible, both technologically and humanly.
