Kia Carnival Hybrid bookings open in India, launch expected soon

Key highlights

  • Kia has opened pre-bookings for the Carnival Hybrid in India
  • It gets a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong-hybrid powertrain with a 73.4 hp electric motor
  • The hybrid will expand the Carnival range beyond its existing diesel powertrain

Kia India has opened pre-bookings for the Carnival Hybrid, marking the introduction of a strong-hybrid powertrain to its premium MPV. The model is expected to be launched in India shortly and will be offered alongside the existing diesel-powered Carnival.

The new powertrain

The India-spec Carnival Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 180 hp and 265 Nm. It is paired with a more powerful electric motor than the one used in the Sorento Hybrid, developing 73.4 hp and 304 Nm. Kia is expected to pair the system with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The hybrid powertrain will be offered in the Limousine+ trim, which is currently the sole variant of the Carnival in India. The existing Carnival uses a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 193 hp and 441 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Kia has not revealed the official combined output, fuel-efficiency figure or hybrid battery specifications for the India-spec Carnival. These details are likely to be announced closer to the launch.

Features and equipment

In terms of equipment, the hybrid retains the premium cabin layout of the Carnival. The MPV gets a three-row interior with second-row captain seats, dual 12.3-inch displays, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, ventilated and heated front seats, three-zone climate control and powered sliding doors. Safety equipment includes eight airbags, Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera.

The hybrid Carnival will also be locally assembled in India, helping Kia keep import-related costs under control. The company has been expanding its multi-powertrain strategy in India, with strong hybrids forming an important part of its electrification plans.

Final thoughts

The Carnival Hybrid could be an interesting alternative for buyers who want the space and comfort of a large MPV without committing to a diesel powertrain. It also gives Kia a strong-hybrid offering in a segment where options remain limited. The final price and fuel-efficiency figure will determine just how compelling it becomes.
