India recently saw its largest-ever protests that initiated from an online meme page, called Cockroach Janta Party. What began as an online joke turned into India’s biggest student protests ever. Now, within hours of its wrap-up, a new online party has formed, gaining thousands of followers within hours, in a similar fashion to the CJP. The party calls itself ‘E20 Janta Party’, and it demands ethanol-free petrol nationwide.
There are two major demands of the E20 Janta Party that are being made through online posts: first is to provide 100 per cent pure petrol at a discounted rate across the nation, and second is the resignation of the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
While these demands might sound childish, these shall not be taken lightly, especially by the government. The reason is the amount of aggression among motorists across India ever since the E20 ethanol-blended petrol has started to be supplied and is affecting the old vehicles across the country. The CJP protest was also seen as a childish demand at the start, but it suddenly gained momentum across India, further becoming the biggest-ever protest across the nation.
Why is E20-free petrol being demanded?
Old vehicles that are non-E20-compliant are reported to be suffering from the ethanol-blended petrol at a mass level. Thousands of motorists across the nation are demanding pure petrol because the ethanol blend is damaging their fuel supply systems. Multiple online videos showcase that the fuel pumps and the fuel tanks are the worst affected by the E20 petrol.
Moreover, even the E20-compliant vehicle owners are reporting a steep decline in their respective vehicles’ fuel efficiency. The demand for 100 per cent pure petrol is reasonable, as the majority of India’s two-wheelers run on the E10 blend or pure petrol, and these are not compliant with the E20 petrol. Additionally, crude oil prices have already lowered in the international market, but the Indian government is still selling petrol at a premium rate.
