Hyundai introduces usage-based insurance for Bluelink customers, offers up to 15% savings

Key highlights

  • Hyundai Motor India has introduced Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) for eligible Bluelink-connected car owners.
  • Customers with a driving score of 70 or above may qualify for insurance benefits, including savings of up to 15% on the own-damage premium.
  • The score is calculated using driving behaviour over the previous three months, without requiring additional hardware or installations.

Hyundai Motor India has introduced a Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme for customers with eligible Bluelink-connected vehicles. The initiative links driving behaviour with insurance premiums, potentially allowing safer drivers to save on the own-damage component of their policy during renewal.

The programme will be facilitated through Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB), which will act as an intermediary between the carmaker and participating insurance companies. The first phase includes Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

How it works

The UBI programme uses driving data collected through Hyundai’s Bluelink connected-car platform to generate an individual driving score. The score is based on vehicle usage and driving behaviour over the previous three months.

Hyundai will evaluate parameters such as rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration, harsh braking, speed control and idling behaviour. Since the information is collected directly from the vehicle, customers do not need to install any additional devices or hardware.

The driving score can be accessed through the Bluelink app. Customers whose insurance renewal is due within the next 90 days can check their score and explore potential benefits.

How to unlock savings

Customers achieving a UBI score of 70 or above may become eligible for additional insurance benefits, subject to the underwriting rules and terms of the participating insurer.

Hyundai says customers could save up to 15% on the own-damage component of their insurance premium in certain cases. However, the actual benefit will depend on the insurer’s assessment and underwriting criteria.

Those scoring below the threshold can use personalised driving tips available through the app to improve their driving behaviour. Sharing the score with insurers is consent-based, giving customers the option to decide whether they want their driving data considered for insurance benefits.

Eligible Hyundai customers and availability

The programme will be available to eligible customers across Hyundai’s product portfolio, provided their vehicles are equipped with Bluelink connectivity and their insurance renewal falls within the specified eligibility window.

Hyundai currently has over 8 lakh connected cars on Indian roads and is targeting one million cumulative connected-car sales by 2027.
