More affordable Ather Konarc scooter launch delayed: Here’s why

Key highlights

  • Ather Konarc entry-level variant launch delayed
  • Production limitations have constrained output to 18,000- 20,000 per month
  • Consumer pre-orders are more than double YoY

In the latest development, Ather is reported to have pushed the launch of the new, affordable, entry-level variant of the Konarc EV to Q4 FY2027. Earlier, the brand had scheduled the launch of this variant by Q1 FY2027.

The reason behind this delay? Well, Ather is currently facing a production constraint. The brand says that customer pre-orders have more than doubled YoY to about 1.8 lakh units in Q2 FY2027.

The brand is currently facing a hefty production constraint. The monthly average production output is around 33,000 units, while demand of around 18,000 to 20,000 units is going unmet. Ather has revealed that its Hosur plant is running at 98 percent capacity.

In order to meet customer demands, Ather’s board recently approved a Rs 122 crore expansion investment plan to increase the production output. The brand revealed that Rs 58 crore will be invested solely in the Hosur plant to increase its output from 4.2 lakh units (present) to 4.95 lakh units annually. This expansion will take place by December 2026.

Meanwhile, the brand is also working on a new battery line that is set to go live by Q3 FY2027. On the other hand, a Rs 64 crore budget has been approved for the expansion of the AURIC production plant in Chattarpati Sambhajinagar. This plant will begin its commercial production in December, later this year, with an annual capacity of up to 5 lakh units.

With that said, the expansion plan, once live, will increase the total annual production output of Ather from 9.2 lakh units (present) to 11.45 lakh units annually. Further, the brand is also working on expanding its EL platform, which houses the Konarc electric scooter. This platform is set to offer a range of EVs that will be focused on the cost-sensitive market.
