Tata Avinya to use Freelander 8’s platform – Here’s why
We already know that Tata has been working on its upcoming premium electric SUV nameplate, called Avinya. The Avinya brand is being constructed as a global, premium EV brand, which will house various models that will compete in the international market.
Earlier, Tata had planned to use JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture or EMA. The EMA platform has been developed to house the electric Range Rover as well. This collaboration included the terms of producing JLR’s upcoming EVs, which are the electric Range Rover models, at Tata’s Tamil Nadu plant. However, it could not sustain as multiple standard and quality failures were reported by JLR from vendors in the trial run.
But, Tata did not give up, and it went ahead to ask for help from the Chery-JLR partnership. The latter recently unveiled its new electric brand, called Freelander. Chery-JLR Freelander 8 was unveiled a few weeks ago, and now Tata aims to use this platform for the Avinya EVs.
The report also states that Tata’s spokesperson has confirmed that the Avinya X will hit the showrooms in 2027 due to the P2, which has been enabled only after the Chery-JLR platform came into the picture. With that said, the Avinya X is likely to offer a battery size of around 80 kWh, and it will also be launched in Europe and other international markets.
The Avinya electric SUVs will be made in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu, at Tata’s production facility. This facility was earlier destined to manufacture the electric Range Rover cars, but that plan has been shunted off now.
